This makes it more difficult to walk and move about.\n\nDoctors and physiotherapists think that special exercises to stretch the muscles in the legs could make it easier to walk and do more of the things they want to do.\n\nWe have tried to make the exercises interesting and fun.\n\nWe are asking lots of children with cerebral palsy, from across the country, to take part in this study.\n\nHalf the children will do the new SPELL exercises and half will do the usual physio exercises.\n\nThe group doing the new SPELL exercises will see a physiotherapist 6 times in 4 months.\n\nYou will do these exercises at home or school 4-5 times each week, with help if you need it.\n\nThe group doing the usual exercises will see a physiotherapist once to go through them and agree which activities to do.\n\nTo make the study fair, neither you nor the doctors and physiotherapists can choose which treatment you have.\n\nIt is decided by a computer using a process called randomisation.\n\nWe want to find out which exercise programme works best.\n\nWe also want to find out if the SPELL exercises give you more muscle soreness than usual exercises.\n\nIf you join the SPELL study, a physiotherapist will carry out some simple tests to look at how your legs move and how fast you can walk.\n\nWe will ask some questions about your walking, how well you can do activities, how you feel and if you’ve missed any school.\n\nAfter 6 months you will come back to the hospital and a physiotherapist will carry out the same simple tests.\n\nWe will also send you the same set of questions by email or by post, at 6 months and at 12 months.",{"sectionLabel":106},"SPELL Participant Information Animation",{"type":108,"settings":109,"title":110,"text":111,"image":112,"sectionSettings":114},"text_and_image",{"imgWidth":90,"imgPosition":91},"## Background","Cerebral palsy is caused around the time of birth when babies suffer brain injury from lack of oxygen in the brain. As they grow during their early years, children with cerebral palsy often develop stiff muscles. They often have difficulty walking and moving and that makes it difficult for them to join in many different activities.\n\nPhysiotherapy becomes a big part of their lives and aims to train their muscles, stop them from becoming stiff and help children participate in activities. It is possible that a programme of exercises to stretch their leg muscles could prevent stiffness and help them remain more active. We are not certain that children with CP truly benefit from the time and effort they dedicate to doing these exercises.
